In Search of Spirit
eight artists reflect
a Group Show curated by Trevor Horsnell
G1

The word spirit takes on a different meaning for each individual. To some it may have religious connotation to others it may be a relationship to a higher self and again to others it may be the belief in a universal energy...perhaps it is simply that feeling of connectivity that comes from the act of artistic creativity and at a very base level it comes from a bottle.

In search of spirit seeks to present a group of artists who, through their own artistic process and practice find this connectivity and in doing so reflect their own social history and relationship to self and community. Perhaps this idea raises the questions about where the real blends with the energy of the self and is this in fact the connection that many practitioners speak of?
All of those represented in this show have their own ideas and search in their own unique way...the result is a diverse exhibition full of colour, form, honesty and narrative that speaks of the individual as well as the collective.

On Any Given Day
An Installation
G2

Have you ever stopped to wonder about the images you see on any given day?
The tangible, the touchable and recognizable...it is solid and what we would all call real.
So what of the images that are inspired by this reality? Are they not real in their own right? Do they not reflect the world that we know as solid and in doing so become worlds of their own?
These offerings on a 2d surface that give the onlooker the keys to narratives that lead the imagination on a parallel path and perhaps allow the possibility of multiple relationships to space, place and social history.
To explore this idea I have explored the tools of digital media as an extension to my practice. Instead of leaving the traditional behind I have continued to embrace this media, however I have then taken this traditional media back into the environment that has been the catalyst for the resulting mental collages, suspended this work using discretely placed star pickets, and taken digital video and digital still photography (note: these support elements do not appear in the final images).
The purpose of this process is to create a video installation that speaks of post-modern relationships to contemporary realism, and by exhibiting the traditional works in the same gallery space I seek to instigate a dialogue between traditional realist imagery and contemporary realist imagery. The result is a multi-layered exhibition that reflects my relationship to community and the urban environment, while posing questions of the relevance of realism to contemporary art.
