Prue Sailer, Lauren Potts

Natural History Illustration
Honours Exhibition 2008

G1

Each of these artists recently graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art at the University of Newcastle and has completed their Honours year in the Department of Natural History Illustration. This exhibition showcases the artwork submitted for their Honours qualification.

Lauren Potts’ series of paintings, sculptures and richly symbolic still-life drawings examines the varied perceptions of the European Red Fox. In questioning the common Western view of the Fox being a valueless pest that demands eradication, Lauren explains, “my interest lies in the
contrast of this Western view with the multiple views held by other cultures around the world. The Fox is a creature that is simultaneously revered and reviled.”

Gavin Anderson’s sequential pencil drawings question the ancestry of different species. The sequence creates “a chain of evolution in locomotion, morphing between common and created fauna.” While some of Gavin’s intermediate creatures are based on those found in the fossil record, others are hypothetical.

The intricacies of nature’s surface textures are the focus of Prue Sailer’s oil paintings. In particular, the extreme close-up view of animal skins, scales and feathers are enlarged to highlight the profound beauty and diversity in the natural world that can be so easily overlooked.

The exhibited works demonstrate the diversity of interest and practices being explored by Natural History Illustrators today, reaching beyond the realms of traditional illustration.
