The emotionally charged industrial landscape paintings and prints of Andy Devine chart a voyage, not only of physical displacement and resettlement in a foreign land but also a voyage of self discovery and the establishment of personal identity. Having grown up in the industrial heartland of North-East England, Devine has transposed the imagery, memories and emotions of his youth to the industrial environment of his adopted city of Newcastle, Australia. Devine secures his boldly expressive visions of industrial foreboding to a classicist frame through highly developed drafting skills. These are not the romantic outpourings from encountering the natural sublime, as with Turner but are more disturbing and unsettling as they confront us with the prospect of our own humanly constructed demise. These works are full of social and political content as well as being deeply personal explorations of the nature of dislocation and belonging. The use of familiar industrial imagery, along with his use of text serve as the links between the formative past and the active present through which he has been able to explore his identity and his mark. This self-reflection conveys memory, nostalgia, melancholy, and the enduring sense of loss. (John Barnes)

This carefully distilled body of paintings show very clearly John Barnes' deep attachment to the land that sustains us all, in all its fragility and vulnerability. The earth colours that make up his palette amplify the increasingly arid nature of our continent while also exposing the primal energies contained within it.
